Forest de Cerisy (National Forest).
On our doorstep is the Cerisy Forest. 2,130 hectares of tall beech and oak trees to discover on foot, horseback or bicycle. At all times magnificent this forest with its picnic tables and trails is user friendly and absorbing. Car parks are conveniently sited to enable families to picnic safely and comfortably. Deer and wild boar make their home in the forest and can sometimes be seen in early evening feeding at the roadside. In their successive seasons hedgerows and banks are speckled with primroses, wild orchids, foxglove and campanula and traveller’s joy festoons the ancient hedges.
D Day landing beaches and the battle for Normandy.
Positioned astride the June 1944 boundary between 1st US Army and 2nd British Army and close to the airborne landings, invasion beaches and major sites of the Battle of Normandy, Le Manoir de Hérouville is ideally located for tours of the Normandy battles.
Magical Mont St Michel is an hour away by car.
Bayeux is just 20 minutes away with its cathedral and tapestry. Spend time in the dimly lit and hushed quiet of the tapestry and you can detect William’s PR machine in full swing. The tapestry itself was stitched in England but came to rest in Bayeux, if you are from the south of England you may be interested in the little model of the court house in East Meon, Hampshire which is still standing and is now a family home. For the past 22 years during the first week-end in July the environs of the cathedral are turned into a medieval fayre with a medieval market, medieval building site, a parade in costumes... The population of Bayeux enter into this festival with gusto and with great attention to detail and authenticity. Experienced in conjunction with the architecture it gives a surreal impression of time travel as mummers and stilt walkers, Norman knights and damsels stroll past you in the cobbled alleyways.
St Lo is 20 minutes in the other direction. During the liberation of France, this gallant Norman town suffered 95% damage to its magnificent architecture. Visit the Church of Notre Dame to see a display of pictures which tell the story of those grim days. American visitors to St Lo are moved by the warmth and friendship extended to them by the local people, although hard hit by the Allied offensive their liberators are regarded with affection and gratitude.
The National Haras is located on the outskirts of St Lo. In itself a spectacular set of buildings, it houses an even more spectacular set of stallions. Visit it on Thursday afternoons during the summer and watch exhibitions of horsemanship and driving of which the French are justifiably proud.
Honfleur is just over an hour away, historic and beautiful why not sit by the harbour in one of the excellent water side bistros sipping an apero and watching the world go by ?
If golf is your game then you will be well catered for as there are 12 golf courses within easy reach. The 27 hole course at Omaha beach is of international standard.
You would expect to find stables in horse mad Normandy and there are 2 excellent riding establishments within 10 minutes of Le Manoir. Beach and forest rides are popular with visitors to the area.
When the children need to work off some energy a visit to Festy Land is your answer. Vikings, jousting, rope walkways, pirates and dinosaurs are enough to keep anyone busy for the day. 12€ for adults and 10€ for children located on the N13 near Caen.
If you are keen on fishing then you have the choice of drowning worms for fun on our own well stocked lake, or more seriously at the popular and well maintained Etangs de Planquery which is less than 5 minutes from Le Manoir.
Parks and gardens flourish in the climate of Normandy. Find information about them at www.normandy-tourism.org.
